Five Lands

September 9, 2014

cinqueterre-3

Cinque Terre, which literally means five lands, was our first stop on this Italy and Greece adventure, and man was it a treat. I’ve never seen such views before or hiked so many stairs. The Cinque Terre are five fishing villages perched on the Italian coastline strung together by hiking trails or a train line. We arrived by train and after a long day of traveling (it started with Ben and I’s version of the Amazing Race at 3:30 in the morning running around London very, very lost… needless to say we were ready to be there after traveling by bus, trolley, plane, train and foot) we headed straight to the room to drop our bags and head to the water. Everything here is straight up the mountain, meaning stairs on stairs on stairs.

cinqueterre-4 cinqueterre-6

We stayed in Vernazza, the fourth town along the coast and really loved it. It was quaint with amazing views and the perfect spot for sitting near the water. cinqueterre-9 cinqueterre-11

I mean come on…. look at this place!cinqueterre-14

After some exploring we trekked up the trail to a little restaurant for wine and a view to accompany it. cinqueterre-16 cinqueterre-17 cinqueterre-18

We decided to do dinner near the water and naturally went for the pasta and pizza. We are in Italy after all!cinqueterre-19 cinqueterre-20

So that was Sunday. Then came Monday. We started our day early and took the train down to the Monterosso al Mare to start our hike throughout the cities. I can not express enough how beautiful the sites are. Pictures just don’t cut it. cinqueterre-22 cinqueterre-23 cinqueterre-25

Here we are still bright eyed and bushy tailed because it was the first of our hikes. Instead of taking the path along the sea we opted for the mountain path. Holy straight up hill. Stair after stair we hiked.
cinqueterre-26

cinqueterre-27 cinqueterre-30

I call this my thank goodness we made it to the first town face. And onward we went. The hikes between each town went straight up hill to the top then straight back down to the town. cinqueterre-34 cinqueterre-36

I just love him!cinqueterre-48

Now for the story of finding the secret beach: Guvano. I’ll give you directions.

First, instead of walking up the entire massive winding staircase (like we did at first) you don’t. You go down the not so obvious ramp beside it and follow to the right past a few homes. Then you reach the entrance to an old train tunnel. Against all inhibitions you proceed to enter said pitch black tunnel. Like you can’t see your hand in front of you black tunnel with eery drips of water. Throughout the .25 mile walk through tunnel you proceed to squeeze your husband’s arm and explain how you are confident bats will eat you alive, or that there is no end to the tunnel and request to turn around. But just keep walking. Then I assure you, you will see light at the end of the tunnel (WHOLE new meaning now). Say hello to the friendly Italian people by the tunnel (he called himself the beach keeper) and drop a euro or two in his bucket and keep following the path. Then you get to the side of the cliff and use the rope to get down. Finally you will see the most lovely of beaches.

Although incredibly glad we did it, I was SURE we were going to die. Needless to say, I had a bit more pep in my step to get back out of that tunnel on the way back.

More pasta, more bread! So much bread. cinqueterre-52 cinqueterre-54cinqueterre-53

cinqueterre-59cinqueterre-57Cinque Terre, you stole our hearts and we truly are sorry we only gave you two nights when you deserve two weeks. This was a huge check off of Ben’s bucket list, as well as mine, and we promise to be back!

hello from london

September 5, 2014

We made it! We are finally here, and so glad to call London home. Although we just got here yesterday, it feels like we have been here for weeks. We took a redeye flight from DC to London and got here around 7:30 am where we were met by one of the members of the Rotary Club who gave us a ride into the city with all of our bags. flying to London Flying to London windowWe are in love with our new home. First of all our front yard is Trafalgar Square and we are in the midst of it all and even walking distance from Ben’s school. Also let’s talk about these windows… they are down right dreamy and are in every room! We have the most lovely views and it truly is hard to believe we actually get to live here! We are also excited that it has two bedrooms so we can host our friends and family (hint, hint come visit!).

London home Trafalgar Square

London view from homeAfter throwing our bags into the flat we adventured all day. We went to LSE, a few parks, in and out of shops, a few landmarks, and walked a whole lot. Living in a big city is so different from what I am use to and it has been funny to learn the differences. A big one: grocery shopping. Ben in Park

We have started to explore the tube and have played the game of “let’s get off at this stop and see where it takes us.” Kind of a fun game!tube station Carrie standing in london home

I’m learning we are going to walk, a lot. walking in london

London neighborhoodTonight we had the pleasure of joining Stewart (the Rotary member who picked us up from the airport), his wife, and sister-in-law at a Civil Service Club and had the best of times. Ben enjoyed pork schnitzel with bubbles and squeak if that gives you an idea of our meal. Stewart has really taken us under his wing and helped us begin to learn all the ins and outs of the city. God love Stewart. This year is going to be good, I’m talking real good.

I already really [say in British accent for added effect] love this city.

farewell Annapolis

August 24, 2014

As our time in Annapolis is coming to a close, I’d like to share a few of my favorite places and things that will be missed.

I’ve mentioned Annebeth’s before, but it truly is one of our favorite little shops that is steps from our door. It has the best treats, fresh baked bread, and unique beer and wine.

Annebeths

I’ll also miss picking up our coffee each week from City Dock Coffee. They have the best coffee and a dreamy little seat in the window. I suppose we will have to find a new favorite in London.city dock coffee

Really Maryland Avenue is just a gem all around. Filled with shops and antique stores it’s a favorite of mine to stroll around through. (Laundromat- you will not be missed. Sorry.)annapolisMaryland Avenue

I came across Navette, also located on Maryland Avenue, at the beginning of the summer and it has become a frequent place I visit. They are a little shop that has some treasures such as vintage finds, designer clothes, and fun accessories.Navette consignment

I’ll miss all of our little “shortcuts” to places.

My favorite flower guy, Darim! God love this guy. I passed by him most everyday on my walk to work and have chatted with him a handful of times. He sells the most beautiful flowers each day and I’ve loved his smiling face. flowers annapolis-8 annapolis-9 annapolis-10 annapolis-11

I especially love this little short cut because it takes us to the next picture…annapolis-12

This place is pure gold. Annapolis Ice Cream Company, you know the way to my heart and it comes in the form of half a scoop of peanut butter oreo and the other half peanut butter chocolate in a waffle cone. Goodness, these people know how to make ice cream. You will be dearly missed. Also shout out to Ben for joining me on these little dates even though he apparently has zero signs of a sweet tooth. Even he is a believer in this place. annapolis-13

I’ve loved enjoying City Dock. Whether it be sitting by the water for a late night pizza, watching live music, enjoying lunch from the Market House, or jogging by on an evening run with Ben. annapolis-14

Annapolis also has the dreamiest doors, most lovely window boxes of flowers, and greatest house colors.

This place has been a great summer home and both Ben and I will miss it, but we are both excited for the next thing!

my most favorite day

August 21, 2014

May 31, 2014 will forever be my most favorite day. Not only did I get to marry my best friend, but we were surrounded by all of our friends and family from so very many different walks of life. It’s not everyday you have both sides of family from all over the United States, high school friends, Clemson friends, Navy friends, and your best friend who lives in LA all there to celebrate with you. The sun showed up for the day bringing the most beautiful weather. For someone who gets overly anxious, my wedding day was filled with nothing but joy and excitement. The morning was spent getting my hair and makeup done before we headed to the venue. Once we got to Wisteria Ridge, the music went on. Thank goodness for loud speakers and a lot of dancing to shake any nerves out and for this song.Carrie reading letter zipping up dress bridesmaids first look

Having your childhood best friend, your roommates, and your new sister standing by you is the best feeling. These humans, they are my favorites, and so dear to me.

You know the scene in Matilda where the little girl gets swung by her pigtails into a field of wild flowers and grabs them as she goes? That’s how I explained what I wanted my bouquet to look like and they nailed it. carrie carrie bridal

Ben and I went back and forth deciding whether to do a first look and I am so glad we decided for it. It was such a special moment of the day. Time stopped as I walked up behind him and my heart raced and tears streamed. It was such a special quiet moment to share with him before the rush of the day.first look first look carrie and ben radford SGP_Carrie&Ben_Married169 carrie hair

I loved the whole planning process of adding personalized touches. My mom and I thrifted all of the centerpieces with trinkets, books, vintage floral fabrics, and pictures of Ben and I throughout high school and college with little memories written on each. Most all of our flowers are from a family friend’s farm and turned out more beautiful than I could have imagined. Wild flowers and lots of greenery are the way to my heart.

This is one of my absolute favorite pictures from the entire day. You see, this is right after we got down the aisle and looked at each other and exchanged the whole, “oh my gosh we are married!!” look. It really started to sink in and sometimes you just celebrate by planting a big ole kiss on each other. SGP_Carrie&Ben_Married465

Planning a wedding is no easy task, but enjoying it is. Marrying your best friend is a gift and a joy. I have never smiled so much in one day or felt more loved. Ben, thank you for taking me as your bride and I hope you always stay this excited (see picture above) to be my husband ;).

watt a happy day

August 17, 2014

This weekend was an absolute dream. All of my most favorite people were finally back in one place and all was well in the world. And, to top it off we all got to celebrate some of my dearest friends, Liz and Ashton, on their wedding day. #wattahappyday

These are my go to people and it has been such a long summer without them.Goodness, I am thankful for their friendship and their hearts. Getting to laugh all weekend and catch up and all be in the same place was exactly what I needed. Leaving each other for more than a few weeks should never be allowed.

wattwedding-2 wattwedding-4

Sweet Ashton and Liz are my favorite couple. You two know how to make everyone feel so loved, and you deserved to be celebrated.

wattwedding-7

Also, one of my favorite things over these past few months is having my husband and best friends together in one place. It has been such a rare occasion over these past four years and my two worlds finally get to collide and they are real friends which is the absolute best to watch.

wattwedding-8 wattwedding-9

He is my favorite date.

wattwedding-10

I mean wow, look at her! Liz- you are hot and dangerous. Liz, you are the ideal bride. The venue, the decorations, the ceremony, the food, and everything in between was the most beautiful. Stick this girl in a magazine I tell ya.

wattwedding-11

Getting ready with everyone again was such a treat. It is the little things that I have missed. We all have our jobs- Kat is makeup, Steph is hair. Pre wedding festivities included a lot of curling irons, laughs, more peanut M&Ms than should be allowed, fish bowl, music, and a lot of pictures.

Blurry, but Liz you are the most beautiful! Welcome to the married club my dear!

I am so thankful to now always have a dance partner and wedding date. I mean, we danced our faces off. Hope you don’t mind being stuck with me, Ben.Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

This weekend was more than I could have asked for. A perfect wedding celebrating the perfect couple with the biggest Clemson reunion. It ended with a lot of hard goodbyes and tears as Ben and I get ready to move across the pond, but it was the greatest last hoorah. I really, really love these people and truly believe it is such a rare gift to find friends as wonderful as these.

a weekend in Dallas

August 10, 2014

This past weekend Ben and I ventured to Dallas to spend a few days with Ben’s aunt and uncle, Maggie and Bob. We have been looking forward to this little weekend getaway all summer, and it did not disappoint. After arriving on Friday we headed to lunch to grab some tasty tacos before heading to the George W. Bush Presidential Library.

When you first walked in the ceiling was surrounded by a 360 degree video playing with the most beautiful scenes.

We even got to play around in a replica of the Oval Office!

On Saturday we woke up and enjoyed quite the decadent breakfast complete with croissants from a nearby bakery, eggs, coffee, and the best berries. Such a lovely way to start a full day. Breakfast in Dallas

And then there was the pool. Easily one of our favorite parts of the trip as you can see.

Ben playing in poolAfter quite the relaxing morning by the pool we were treated to Tex Mex. If there is one thing about I have learned about Ben and I this summer, it’s that we can put down some Mexican food. We are huge supporters of chips and salsa and all things related [guac]. After lunch we headed to the Winspear Opera House downtown to see the Phantom of the Opera. The design of the venue was incredible and the show was by far one of the best I have seen. I mean the voices on the performers were unbelievable. I will never understand how they have the lung capacity to do what they do. The sets and music were so beautifully done! It was all such a treat!

Winspear Opera House Winspear Opera House outside the Winspear Opera House outside the Winspear Opera HouseI really like him a lot.

We had some time after the show to venture around Dallas and get the tour of the city before heading to dinner. I do believe we are both fans of this city. Let’s discuss dinner: Pecan Lodge. With a dad who makes some of the best barbecue around at Baum’s BBQ, I am pretty particular about my barbecue. That being said, this was easily some of the best I have had (right up there with The Smokin Pig for all you Clemson people). We ordered the sampler and got a taste of all the meat. So good. Ben was truly in heaven.Pecan Lodge Pecan Lodge dinner BBQ

We had such a good time catching up with Maggie and Bob, exploring a new city, relaxing, eating our weight in food, and playing in the pool. Our weekend in Dallas was a good one!

it started with french toast

August 5, 2014

This morning I was woken up by a husband holding a plate of french toast topped with strawberries, blueberries, and bananas AND coffee just the way I like it AND I got to stay in bed to enjoy it all. What more could I possibly ask for?!  Apparently I have expressed my feelings towards french toast a lot recently and Ben decided to surprise me with one of my favorite breakfasts. Any day started with breakfast in bed is off to a good start.

Another gift we received at our wedding was a gift certificate to go paddle boarding and we decided today was finally the day. The weather has been kind of bizarre recently and made us change our minds each time we thought about going, but today was the perfect summer day. Ben chased ducks and I did everything in my power not to fall when boats went by, and that about sums up our paddle boarding experience.

Paddle Boarding East Port paddleboarding paddleboarding-3 paddleboarding-4 paddleboarding-5 paddleboarding-6

After paddle boarding, we headed back to the abode to make some dinner before heading back to City Dock to try out a new eno spot we have had our eye on. We can’t take full credit for this gem of a location though. Last week we saw a few people using the docks to hang their enos and they are geniuses. We decided this is going to be a reoccurring thing.enu enu-2 enu-3 enu-4 enu-6 enu-10 enu-11

Vineyards and DC trips

July 26, 2014

Whenever I walk home from work I pass by Annebeth’s, a little shop that has become a favorite of Ben and I’s. Sometimes we are even given the extra homemade bread at night they didn’t sell during the day, which is an absolute treat. I’ve noticed a brand of wine they sell called Great Frogs and recently learned they are located just minutes away from downtown Annapolis. Last night Ben and I bought tickets to go to their Vine Yard Bash with wine tastings, music, food, and a projected movie on the screen. It was perfect weather and we arrived at the vineyard right around sunset. vineyardvineyard-2

vineyard-4 vineyard-5vineyard-6

After sampling a few of their wines we chose our favorites (which always seem to be different) and headed on over to the popcorn station. I truly forgot how much I love popcorn! Especially when it comes in those red and white striped bags.
vineyard-7vineyard-9 vineyard-11

We found a spot right in front of barn to enjoy the music while they set the movie up and even got to try some of their new dessert wine they are releasing. The vineyard was beautiful and quaint and I loved seeing everyone who came out to enjoy the evening. Blankets, chairs, dogs running around, and friends covered the field and it seemed as though everyone knew everyone. I loved the feel of it all, a true summer night. vineyard-10 vineyard-13 vineyard-12 vineyard-15 vineyard-14

This morning was spent at the gym together (after Ben came to the rescue when I locked the keys in the car, oops) and then by city dock for lunch. Like I said before, the weather has really been treating us so well. We hung out all day before heading to DC for a meet and greet for those who attended and are attending LSE. Meeting some new faces and talking about travel and school made this whole moving to London for a year thing start to feel a little bit more tangible. Next is flat shopping and booking flights! Goodness, I am excited!falafel-3 falafel-2 falafel falafel-4

We then headed to a restaurant called Busboys and Poets which served as a bookstore, coffee shop, and really good restaurant. I loved the atmosphere and the food hit the spot. We ended our day with the drive home listening to the Totally 2000s Spotify playlist which I highly recommend. And by highly, I mean go look it up now. Ben and I have developed quite the duets.
